7 Ways to Save Money on Your Pet’s Medical Expenses and Supplies

Owning a pet is often wonderful, but it also comes with costs. In some cases, pet medical expenses and supplies can add up incredibly quickly. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to make everyone more manageable. Whether you need to make sure a visit to an animal medical hospital is affordable or want to keep costs down when shopping for everyday supplies, here are seven ways to save money when caring for your pet.

1. Get a Pet Care Plan

Just as medical insurance makes healthcare more affordable for people, a pet care plan can work wonders when you need to reduce your pet’s medical expenses. While there is insurance for pets, not all of those programs are particularly affordable, and some require you to jump through a lot of hoops to get reimbursed. Fortunately, there are alternatives that cost less but make a big difference when your pet needs veterinary services.

For example, Pet Assure’s discount veterinary plan helps you save whenever you need to take your pet to the vet, and it costs much less than traditional pet insurance. Plus, unlike most pet insurance programs, it doesn’t rely on reimbursements. Instead, by going to an in-network veterinarian, the discount is applied immediately. That means you pay less out of pocket without having to file any extra paperwork, making it highly convenient.

2. Shop Around for Pet Supplies

When you need pet supplies, shopping around to find the best deal is a must. The cost of prescription and non-prescription items varies a lot between different retailers and vet offices, so it’s worth seeing if you can find a better price by heading elsewhere.

One place that’s always worth a look is Budget Pet Care. The company offers highly competitive prices, and there’s an option for free shipping for orders in the US.

3. Keep Up with Wellness Appointments

While bringing your pet in for a wellness check and routine procedures like vaccinations or dental cleanings does cost money, it’s usually worthwhile. Staying on top of their health ensures that any problems are spotted early. As a result, if there is a medical issue that needs addressing, it may be less expensive to treat than if the condition was not attended to quickly, resulting in a savings overall.

Preventative care can also significantly reduce the likelihood of certain high-cost health issues. For example, vaccinations can keep your pet from getting diseases that are hard to treat and expensive, making them worth the cost.

4. Buy in Bulk

For pet food and other supplies you’ll need throughout your pet’s life, buying in bulk is often worthwhile. For example, you’ll usually pay less per ounce on pet food by purchasing larger bags instead of smaller ones, resulting in an overall savings.

Just make sure that you can properly store any pet supplies you buy in large quantities. Typically, that’s more challenging with items that are temperature or humidity-sensitive and products that may spoil. Ultimately, you want to buy the largest size that you can keep correctly and use before any expiration dates are reached. That way, you won’t have to throw any away due to improper storage.

5. Manage Your Pet’s Weight

As with people, if a pet is underweight or overweight, they usually experience more health issues. By properly managing your pet’s weight, you can help them avoid health conditions that may harm their quality of life or could lead to significant costs when it’s time for treatment.

Plus, working to ensure your pet doesn’t end up overweight can come with other cost savings. In many cases, overfeeding is what results in excess weight. By keeping their feeding levels appropriate, you’re not serving too much pet food, which helps you get the right amount of mileage from every bag.

6. Do Basic Grooming at Home

While some pets may need to see a professional groomer, handling the basics at home does save money. For example, a groomer or vet may charge around $20 to trim your pet’s nails each time. By getting a pair of nail clippers and doing it yourself, you save a ton of money over the course of your pet’s life.

Proper grooming can also decrease the likelihood of specific conditions that may need treatment. For example, regular ear cleaning may reduce the chances of your pet getting ear infections. As a result, it can help you save by avoiding medical problems that may need treatment.

7. Complete All Treatments

If your pet is prescribed a specific treatment, make sure to follow the vet’s instructions. Failing to follow the directions – such as stopping a course of antibiotics early – can prevent a treatment from doing its job effectively. As a result, the issue being addressed may end up recurring since the treatment wasn’t done correctly.

If that occurs, it generally leads to more expenses since they’ll need a new course of treatment to get well (or potentially a more expensive one if a condition progresses). By following the directions instead, you’re ensuring the initial treatment does its job, and that can save you money in the long run.
